Happy Last Week of School!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with me.  Each day with them was a special treat!  We have come a long way with our reading skills, times tables, division, and cursive writing!  We even managed to do some science experiments and learn about four cultures in social studies.  We are experts at the parables, the Joyful Mysteries, and the celebration of the Mass.  And we have the grades on our Archdiocesan Religion Exam to prove it!

Please send in the math book that your child borrowed as an extra copy for home along with any reading texts that your child may have been using.  I will begin sending home workbooks and notebooks a few at a time today.  Thursday will be a game/movie day.  Your child can bring in a favorite board game to be played with classmates.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy summer!  Don’t forget to take your child to the library.  There are great programs to encourage summer reading, and there are so many fabulous books to read!  Keep hammering away at those times tables.  They are the basis of success in fourth grade math.  Like the song says, “See you in September”!

Happy June!

Our field trip is just one week away!  We raised $110.00 at our bake sale, thanks to your generous and delicious donations.  This brings the cost of our trip down to $18.00.  Money and permission slips are due by Thursday, June 9.  As with all  good field trip destinations, there is a gift shop!  You may decide whether or not you’d like your child to make a purchase.

Tomorrow is the Archdiocesan Religion Exam.  I am happy to report that every child in the class scored 100% on our last review test.  We are experts at the Apostles Creed, the Act of Contrition, and the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary!  Tonight your child will bring home a review test that we completed in class.  That, along with the Review Sheets we’ve been studying, will be a good way to prepare for tomorrow’s test.

Greetings!

We have some good news to share!  Devin Storch has won a singing contest and will be singing “God Bless America” at the Renegade’s Stadium in June.  She has been singing with the older students at our first Friday Masses, so we were not surprised that her lovely voice will be heard by all who gather for Catholic Schools at the ballpark, but we sure are proud!

Speaking of talented students…Madeline Tubens won first place in the Beginners Division of the Orange County CYO Art Contest.  You may remember that Maddy dressed as an artist on Career Day.  She sure is getting an early start on that goal!  Devin Storch took second place in that contest!  Both girls will be invited to attend the Archdiocesan Awards Ceremony on May 20 in New York City.

We have been forging ahead with fractions.  We started with a delicious lesson on unit fractions that allowed us to eat our work!  After cutting our Hershey Bars into equal parts, we enjoyed eating them.  Don’t worry, we still have our fraction slips to help us compare and order fractions.  No one was tempted to chow down on those cardboard pieces!

Happy Mothers Day Week!

We have been busy studying for our Archdiocesan Religion Exam.  We will have our first test on Review Sheet 1 tomorrow.  Today we played a Jeopardy game on our Smartboard complete with the official Jeopardy music.  All we needed was Alex Trebek!  We will continue reviewing in class, but please remember to study at home with your child as well.

We have begun our study of Mexico.  Last week’s reading selection fit right in with our theme as there were many words taken from the Spanish language.  This week we will be learning more about the landforms in Mexico.  We used our social studies text to explore study strategies such as KWL, SQ3R, and QAR.

Happy Easter!

I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter break.  Can you believe it is May already?  I will be sending home a review sheet for the Archdiocesan Religion Exam that is scheduled for next month.  The review sheet will include a study schedule with test dates for each section to make sure that we are all prepared for the exam.

We have moved on to division with remainders.  Boy, do those times tables come in handy now! Not only were those facts put to good use, but also our subtraction facts as we delved into some “long” division.  We will be having our test on chapter nine on Thursday, so please be sure to review.  Flash cards can still be helpful for memorizing those last stubborn facts.

A Blessed Holy Week!

We are learning all about the events of Holy Week.  We have been talking about Palm Sunday and the Passion of Christ.  The children were fascinated by the idea of the foot washing at the Mass on Holy Thursday.  We have used our Smartboard to pray some of the Stations of the Cross.  The children also liked the idea of the blessing of the fire at the Easter Vigil.

We will be moving onto Mexico after Easter break, and we are using this short week to conclude our study of Ireland.  We stumbled through some of the pronunciations of some Gaelic terms with the help of the Smartboard.  We read some more about the land and legends of Ireland, and we took a virtual tour via Smartboard.

Greetings!

Spring has finally sprung!  We have been learning so much about God’s creatures.  Mrs. Ridout found a neat website that gave us so much information about animal adaptations for animals in each of the seven continents.  The class started working on it on Thursday in computer class, and it was such a hit that we went down to the computer lab on Friday afternoon to finish working on it.

We would like to have an Easter brunch on Wednesday, April 20.  We are looking for volunteers to send in muffins, juice boxes, or sliced fruit.  Please send a note with your child if you would like to volunteer.  Also, if anyone is interested in doing an Easter craft with the children, please let me know.
